The Benefits of Magnetic Water Softeners

With the array of choices we have for softening hard water, it can be difficult to decide which method will work best. Therefore, cost is one factor to consider as well as how the unit is set up, its size and its softening capacity.

Testing water hardness is as simple as getting a water test kit from a pool supplier or an establishment that sells water softener systems. Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG), parts per million (PPM), or milligrams per liter (MG/L). Water that measures 3.5 to 7 GPG is considered hard water.

Magnetic water softeners rely on the use of ordinary magnets. The magnets are mounted opposite one another, either outside or inside a water pipe. The water flows between these magnets, through the magnetic field, which affects the ions. A chemical reaction takes place, altering the molecular structure of hard water minerals.

This reaction will take one of two forms: Magnetic or electrostatic. During a magnetic process, the collision process of magnesium or calcium ions is sped up. This takes place in a cool environment, and as a result, lessens the buildup of scale. In contrast, during an electrostatic process, an electrical charge forces the ions to repel one another. The ions are not able to bond and form scale. The main functions of magnetic water softeners are applicable in heating and cooling.

Magnetic water softeners are the subject of much debate, and magnetic water softening systems cannot usually be purchased via retailers. The effectiveness claims made by manufacturers are often backed up by anecdotal evidence, though scientific studies have been done. The outcomes are inconclusive. While it is acknowledged that magnetism does, indeed, alter the hard minerals, the exact effects on the water are unclear. The consensus is that scale formation can be reduced by magnetic treatment; however, the reduction of scale appears to be minimal, roughly 10 percent. An advantage to using a magnetic water softener is that it is a non-chemical treatment.

When it comes to magnetic water softeners, being an educated consumer is the best policy. Explore different types and manufacturers. Compare prices. Other things to consider are what type of environment the water softener will be set up in, the size, installation, and construction of the unit.

They Don’t Know Squat!

There seems to be much confusion amongst trainers and trainees as to
whether squats should be performed all the way down or just half way.
In most gyms today, a common instruction during squats, deadlifts, and
lunges (as taught by many personal training organizations) is not to
allow the knees to travel beyond the toes. Doing so will ultimately cause
the destruction of your knees! I do not agree. There are certain instances
where partial range of motion (ROM) is indicated, but for the most part, I
teach people the full squat for the following reasons:

* It is the most primitive movement pattern known to man; our ancestors
used to perform many daily functions (i.e. harvesting, gathering, hunting,
cooking, eating, etc.) in a full squat position.

* Also, in case anyone hasn’t noticed, we spend 40 weeks in the fetal
position (which is basically a full squat) prior to entering this world - do
we come out with bad knees?

* We should strive to train in full ROM for each and every exercise. The
squat is no exception.

* Every exercise produces stress around a joint - the body then adapts
to this stress.

* Cocontraction of the quadriceps, hamstrings and gastrocnemius
maintains integrity around the knee joint.

* Sheering and compressive forces do occur around the knee joint (as
opposed to only sheering forces that occur in some open kinetic chain
lower body exercises, such as the leg extension); however, the large
contact area of the patella with the femoral groove (as knee flexion
increases during the full squat) helps to dissipate compressive forces.

* Therefore, not only is the squat - as a closed chain exercise -
considered a natural movement pattern with high functional carryover,
but it is also a safe exercise if performed correctly (and that includes full
ROM!)

* Drawer tests are performed at a knee angle of 90 degrees because
there is a greater amount of laxity in the knee joint at that specific angle.
So, does it make sense to only go down half way where you are most
vulnerable especially when greater loads can be used (because you
are much stronger in this partial ROM?)

* According to Ironman contributor, George Turner, the fulcrum moves to
the knee joint in a parallel squat as opposed to the muscle belly of the
quadriceps in a full squat.

* Think about it, if you constantly trained in a limited ROM, the likelihood
of injury increases if one day you happen to squat beyond your trained
ROM.

* Partial squats performed on a regular basis will decrease flexibility.

* There is a low incidence of lower back pain and knee injury in
Aboriginal and Oriental societies which perform full squats on a regular
basis.

* Even Olympic weight lifters who practice full squats have quite healthy
knees compared to other athletes.

* Although you may find some research that indicates full squats as
potentially harmful to the knees, only one study has ever proved this to
be true. However, it was performed on a skeleton - the same results do
not hold true with surrounding connective tissue. On the other hand,
numerous studies show the benefits of full squats.

Unfortunately, many personal training certification courses are teaching
half squats as a safe version suitable for all individuals and this has now
become written in stone. God forbid that you deviate from this golden
rule to do something that our bodies are meant to do! Read this
carefully: squatting should be performed in a full ROM where the
hamstrings make contact with the calves (so that no light can be seen
passing through your legs at the bottom position.) It is okay for your
knees to travel beyond the toes (just do not relax the knees in the bottom
position.) In other words, keep the legs tight and try to stay as upright as
possible throughout the exercise. So, next time some fitness instructor
approaches you in the gym and advises not to go deep while squatting
tell him/her that they don’t know squat!

Marketing Success - How to get over that first hill and start making some real money!

If you’re like a lot of newbie marketers you have heaps of great marketing ideas all the time. Problem is they just seem to fade into nothing without you ever doing a thing about them, Am I right? After a week you have forgotten all about that great new idea or you have that lingering annoying thought in your mind that you have let another great idea turn into nothing.

I mean, who knows if they’re actually great ideas to start with, but the problem is you will never know. Here are a few tips that will help you get over that hill and finally start putting your ideas into action.

Procrastination

This is the number one problem - Putting things off. You NEED a plan and some kind of time management system in place. Prioritize your tasks and keep lists of everything that needs doing. Don’t get too technical with this. You don’t need the latest software or PDA just to manage yourself. Trying using post-its or a simple exercise book. And no matter how much you don’t feel like doing something, just get it out of the way and NEVER leave it until the next day!

Doing It Alone

You can do it alone but it is harder, and without support you are more likely to fail. It doesn’t have to be much. On-line forums, for example, are an amazing source of ideas and encouragement. And with other people, by forming Joint Ventures or starting your own affiliate program you can really leverage your efforts and do FAR MORE than you could ever do on your own.

Be Ambitious

You won’t know unless you try. Assume you can do *anything* - because you can! You may not be ready to do it yet, but don’t set up mental blocks in advance. You can create your own profitable items, sell them well, and have others selling them for you. You can operate a range of websites, even host seminars, or teach others. YOU CAN.

Wasting Money

This one is important. Especially if you don’t have money to burn! Don’t get caught up jumping from opportunity to opportunity or buying everything that comes into your inbox. You’ll be surprised how much you can get for free. Trust me - you don’t need half the stuff you see online. Try to control your emotions and think before you buy. Write a list of pros and cons, and make sure that the product or service is essential to YOU.

If you stick to these suggestions and make a commitment to make them work, you will start to see your bank account increase. Stop looking for the path to overnight riches, there is no such thing.

Fly out of a London airport and leave your car behind

Those of us who live in London know that Gatwick is the easiest airport to fly out of in most cases, but what about Gatwick Airport parking, many will ask? Yes, this can be a complicated issue, but it doesn’t have to be. The best advice frequent travelers can give to infrequent fliers is to reserve yourself a space ahead of time on the internet. Fortunately a couple Gatwick lots just off the airport do offer this service.

Have you ever had a flight and then you were running behind schedule when you were trying to get out of the house? Yes, that happens to all of us, and for some people this happens every time we fly. If you are already running late and you pull up to one of the main lots and there is a long line or a sign out front that says they are full, then what do you do? Some people panic and then cancel their trip altogether, but the smart ones don’t let that happen to them since they’d already reserved a spot not long after they bought their plane ticket in the first place. Do yourself a favor and get in this habit.

Buying a Laptop

Purchasing a laptop computer is not an easy job to do because there are so many important things that should be considered before purchasing. Besides the common things that are shared by desktops such as type of CPU, MHZ of processor, size of RAM, size and type of hard disk, brand and support, there are also things like weight, battery life and connectivity.

You can easily transport your laptop from one location to another because of it’s portability. So make sure that a laptop is suited to your needs, as a desktop computer might be a better option.

Laptop technology is getting more sophisticated every day blurring the line between desktop and laptop in terms of performance. Some high quality laptops have several connectivity options such as wireless network cards (to connect to wireless networks), Centrino technology (internet connectivity almost anywhere) and much more.

Business laptops are generally light and ultra-portable and can be used in daily work, presentations and client liasing. These ultra-portable laptops are both expensive and may not have phenomenal performance but if your needs require maximum portability, this would be the best way to go.

Some laptops offer a storage space of 80 to 100 GIGS hard drives but you can increase the space with an external USB hard drive. Laptops generally need at least 256MB RAM to be able to run certain operating systems. Battery life is an important factor when buying a laptop. The last thing you want is to be in the middle of an important meeting and your laptop dying. The latest models offer 5 or more hours of use depending on what you use it for. Gaming and CPU intensive programs will deplete your battery in a lot less time.

When purchasing a laptop you should always make sure it will fulfill all your needs. If a laptop that fulfills your needs is too expensive then get a desktop. There’s no use buying a laptop that is just going to frustrate you in the end.

Corks or screw caps - The closing argument

It is now very rare to find the total use of natural cork to stop wine bottles with the Rioja region of Spain being the most obvious exception. Increasingly, for a wide variety of reasons, the use of plastic stoppers and screw caps is becoming widespread. Why is this so, and what are the pros and cons of each method, and what should we be looking for when considering the alternatives? This really is a topic of hot debate in the world of wine at the moment. By tasting wines using the different methods of stopping, you can join this debate fully with your own opinions, thereby reinforcing the subjectivity of wine appreciation.

Most consumers still prefer natural cork and think of it as the most classy and professional way to package and stop wine. They would argue that the popping of a cork is part of the romance of wine appreciation, but it is true that the incidence of cork taint is on the increase. This occurs when a bad cork infects the wine with a mouldy, musty smell and flavour. Indeed it is believed that somewhere approaching one in twenty bottle are so affected, and whilst the worse ones are relatively easy to spot, those affected slightly do not become apparent until opened and nearly drunk. Never suffer a corked wine, always send it back or return it to the vendor. Cork producers are working hard to improve the consistency in quality with constantly improving results. It is important to remember that wines bottled using natural cork do generally age well, because the cork allows for a tiny exchange of air within the bottle, resulting in a gradual, small amount of oxidation.

Plastic stoppers prevent this cork taint and indeed some are made to look like natural cork, but they can be difficult to get off the corkscrew and even harder to get back into the unfinished bottle. Probably the most important issue with plastic stoppers is that we do not know how the wine reacts to the plastic. It is this doubt that has prompted producers to move over to screw caps, which were traditionally used to stop cheaper wines. Now more and more premium wine is stopped this way with the Australians and New World producers leading the way, although some progressive Europeans are joining the trend.

Screw caps eliminate cork taint, allow effective resealing and were first used to seal those wines considered to be susceptible to cork taint, such as Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc. Whilst red wines can benefit from cork sealing in terms of taste, screw caps are much easier to use. As for the future screw caps seem to be in the ascendancy at the moment, but as cork producers begin to tackle the problem of taint effectively there might be a revival in its uptake.

How To Make A Cookie Bouquet

I love making bouquets. There are so many different types you can make… Posies,
wedding bouquets, candy bouquets, fruit bouquets and more.

One type of bouquet that I recently started making, is a cookie bouquet…

A cookie bouquet is a bouquet made with cookies, and leaves. They are very fun,
and quite easy to make. This article shows how to make a cookie bouquet in 5 easy
steps…

You will need:
- 9 Chocolate chip cookies
- 2 Bunches of floristry wire
- Cellophane
- Stem-tape
- Leaves

** Step 1: Wire and tape the leaves **

Wire and tape the leaves…

Wire the leaf by pushing the wire through the silk part of the leaf, behind the stem,
loop it around, and then go back through the leaf, and down to the wire.

Then stem tape the wire by holding the wire in one hand, and wrapping (and
stretching), the stem tape with the other hand. Make sure to tape right up to the
leaf.

** Step 2: Prepare cookies **

Cut the cellophane into 9 squares. Make sure the squares are large enough to fit a
cookie.

Wrap the cookies in the cellophane, and then twist the end of the cellophane.

Now wire and tape the cellophane, and snip off any excess cellophane.

** Step 3: Fan the cookies **

Hold the cookies in a bunch in one hand. Then fan the cookies out slightly, to leave
spaces for the leaves…

** Step 4: Fill in with leaves **

Start to place your leaves in between the cookies. Fan the leaves out to make a
circular shape. Then squeeze the bouquet together. If you have any gaps left then
you can fill them in with more leaves.

** Step 5: Prepare the handle **

Neaten the ends of the wires in the handle by trimming them with cutters.

Then stem-tape the handle, and add ribbon trailers if you wish.

That’s it! You’ll find any candy bouquets you make are instant hits with anyone that
sees them. People just seem to LOVE cookie bouquets!

Taking the Leap: Short Hair Styles Great For School

Imagine the splash you’ll make as you walk into class with a new short haircut, one that exudes confidence and style. Will your friends recognize you? Will the teachers do a double take?

Short hair styles are great for school because they are so easy to care for and they really make a statement. Short hair says to the world: “I’m confident enough to get rid of all that hair I used to hide behind. Now you get to see the real me!”

But making the cut won’t be easy if you’ve had medium length or long hair for a while. After all, some of that hair has been with you for years. So to help you make the decision whether to “go short or go home”, here are some of the pros and
cons of changing to one of the new short hair styles:

Pros:

A time saver, especially in the mornings when you’re in a rush.
Can be easily washed every day.
Requires much less care and conditioning than longer hair.
    Looks sporty and fresh.
If you don’t like your short hair style, just wait a few months for it to grow a bit and try another short cut.
    Your earrings finally show!

Cons:

If you’ve never had short hair, it can take some time to get used to that “exposed” feeling.
Short hair styles need to be cut more often, every 4 to 6 weeks, to keep them in shape.
You might have to use more styling products than when your hair was longer.
Some people will try to convince you that guys don’t like short hair on women, but don’t buy it! This is about your style, your comfort, and your confident new look.

How Do I Know if Short Hair Styles Are Right For Me?

One of the best ways to decide which short hair styles suit your face and hair type is to consult with a stylist you trust. Bring along some magazine pictures of styles you like so you can discuss their suitability with your salon pro. He or she will take into account factors like the shape of your face and the thickness of your hair before recommending a cut.

The Magic of Writing Goals in your life!

Goal setting is an important technique used by athletes, successful business-people, lawyers, doctors, and great achievers in all fields. Goal setting is a very powerful technique that can yield strong returns in all areas of your life. Goal setting can help you grow in life. It can help you achieve more.

So what do you need to do first? You need to define a goal. You need to know exactly what you want, when you want it, and why you want it. What ever your dream is. That is your goal. If you don’t know exactly what your goal is, you will not commit to it. You will not have enough of a desire to achieve it. Successful business-people know exactly what they want to achieve in business and they make goals a top priority.

When you do write your goals down, you need to ask yourself one important question. Is this goal realistic? Is it attainable? Do you really believe that you can reach it? Faith is also an important ingredient that can make or break your goal. If you don’t believe that you can make your goal a reality, then you probably won’t. You need to have faith in yourself. You need to have faith in your goals. You need to have faith that you can reach any goal that you set.

This little girl had a dream to become the queen of England. She told everyone that she was going to achieve that goal. Do you think that she can achieve it since she has nothing to do with the royal family? Obviously not. It was a foolish goal. You need to make sure that your goal is realistic, and attainable. Now, if it is realistic then you need to put the proper date on it. The proper action that needs to be taken. You have to do everything in your power to make that goal come true.

So don’t put unrealistic dates on your goal. That is when you can get frustrated. If you are in MLM, you need to find someone who has reached what you are striving for and do exactly what he or she is doing.

You then need to determine what price, what’s the worthiness of that goal. What level of importance are you going to put on it? Is it a want? Is it a need? Is it, “It would be nice to have it”? You need to make that goal a burning desire. You need to make it a must. It is a “Have to have it no matter what” goal. If you do that then you’re your subconscious mind will look for ways to make that goal a reality. It will give you ideas on how you should go about to achieve it.

Now, short-term goals are usually simpler and easier than long-term goals. Why? Well, writing them can help you have more frequent victories, and building momentum with each one you complete. If you do that, you can have more excitement and more motivation as you reach those goals on time. When you do reach you short-term goals, don’t forget to reward yourself and celebrate. Buy new clothes that make you feel like a million bucks. Make a toast to yourself for reaching that goal. You should be feeling so good that you are telling yourself that you can reach ANY short-term goal that you set.

A word of warning for the long-term goals that you make. It will be harder to achieve it because as the time goes by, you can get discouraged and lose your interest. Try to set short-term goals. It will keep you more focused and motivated.

If you haven’t achieved your short-term or long-term goal, you will need to look at your goal and change the date, and the action that you have taken when you didn’t reach that goal. Remember, if you take the SAME action that led you to failure then you will probably get the SAME results. You need to take a look from all angles to see what you did and what you can change.
