Chevy Equinox and Land Rover Freelander

The sport utility market continues to expand despite higher than normal gas prices. The reason? Because, these do-almost-everything-vehicles provide just what consumers want. Sure, sales are down right now, but they will recover as more economical vehicles enter the mix. SUVs carry people, haul stuff, pull stuff, can go off-roading [okay, maybe not the Equinox], provide superior handling than many cars, etc. Fortunately, not all are gas guzzlers either. Chevrolet’s Equinox and the Land Rover Freelander are two that come to mind. Let’s take a look at these two compact SUVs.

Chevrolet Equinox - I like the looks of the Equinox, Chevy’s car-based SUV that is only slightly smaller than the mid-size TrailBlazer. By car-based I mean a vehicle that handles and drives more like a car and is actually built on a car platform [like the Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4, for example]. This means that the Equinox is built chiefly for the road, so if you want an off road experience you would need to opt for the TrailBlazer or get the Freelander. Okay, I digress.

The Equinox is available as either a front wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicle. Seating five passengers, the Equinox comes equipped with a 3.4L V6 that produces 185hp. The engine is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission; no manual transmission is available. A traction control system is standard with the front wheel drive Equinox while all models come equipped with ABS and electric steering. Standard equipment for the Equinox includes power windows, power mirrors, and power locks with Remote Keyless Entry; AM/FM stereo and CD player with six speakers; and air conditioning. The Equinox has received a 5 star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for frontal crash and side-impact crash tests. Starting prices for the Equinox are very competitive with comparable models in its class. Base MSRP for the FWD is just over 22K; 24K for the AWD.

Land Rover Freelander - The smallest of all Land Rovers is the Freelander, a compact full time all wheel drive vehicle available as either a 3 or 5 door SUV. Unlike the Equinox, the Freelander has full off road capabilities as do every Land Rover model. The Freelander comes equipped with a Four-wheel Electronic Traction Control system; ABS; a 2.5L Quad Cam V6 engine paired with a 5 speed automatic transmission; an AM/FM stereo/CD system with RDS radio; air conditioning; fog lamps; a perimeter security system; and much more. The Freelander, a five passenger vehicle, sells for a price starting at just over 27K.

The Freelander is produced in England while the Equinox is built in Canada, In all, both the Equinox and Freelander represent well built compact SUVs with two different purposes: the Equinox is built primarily for the highway and around town and has the stronger engine, while the Freelander is built for both highway and trail.

Create a Magic Connection with Clients, Leads, and Business Associates Part I

A few months ago, arriving at a client’s office to begin a group meeting, I discovered that two women, who had committed to joining us for a series of meetings, had changed their minds. In less than two minutes, I convinced them to join us. Did I use some sort of magic? You bet I did. Would you like to know that magic?

Neuro-Linguistic Programing (NLP), a science that studies the language of the mind, breaks down, step-by-step, the strategies humans use to connect with others. Most people believe that we communicate primarily through language and words. Yet, many business people are aware of body language and its importance in interacting with people. Some may be aware of studies that show that language has less influence on others than physiology and tonality. If we want to connect with others, it behooves us to be consciously aware of how we use physiology and tonality as well as how we use words.

Here is the brake down of how we communicate: 7% through words, 38% through tonality, 55% through physiology. It’s clear that if we focus our communication only on words and language, we are missing out on 93% of our resources for communication. NLP teaches that anyone can establish rapport with another person instantaneously. Rapport in NLP is defined differently from its usual definition. Rapport, as NLP views it, is not developing a relationship, although it may lead to relationship. NLP defines rapport as an instant connection with another person, usually taking place at the subconscious level.

When people meet and instantly feel they know each other, or people are instantly comfortable with each other, this is rapport. “I feel as if I’ve known you for years” is a statement that shows instant rapport.

This kind of rapport happens all the time. People practice rapport unconsciously with friends, family, and new acquaintances. NLP helps us to do consciously and with volition what we do naturally but often unconsciously with the people we know and meet.

This article will sketch out some basic strategies that, if put into practice, can dramatically change a person’s interaction with others and help her to make connections easily. It’s like magic.

PHYSIOLOGY

Since physiology is the primary way people communicate (55%), everyone should have at least a basic understanding of how to establish rapport on a physical level. Posture, breathing, eye movement, blinking are all possible ways of establishing rapport. There are two ways of creating a connection through physiology: matching and mirroring.

Matching is doing the same thing with your body as someone else is doing with her body. For example, if someone standing in front of you has her head tilt to the right, you would tilt your head to the right. If someone were observing you, she would see your heads tilted in opposite directions.

Mirroring creates a mirror image. If someone has her head tilted right, and you are standing in front of her, you tilt your head to the left. To an observer, your heads would be tilted in the same direction.

Both matching and mirroring should be done subtly, not exaggerated. The idea is to connect, not to be offensive. Most people find it offensive if someone is mimicking them. Don’t do what children do when imitating someone with the intention of annoying. When establishing rapport, the goal is to be natural, smooth, and inconspicuous. Observe people who like each other. People do these things naturally. When people are matching and mirroring each other, they are establishing rapport. They are connecting on an unconscious level.

Go back and read the first paragraph of this article. My magic was simple. I noticed that the women were standing with their shoulders slumped forward and they were leaning toward each other. I matched them and smiled. Magic!

People match and mirror each other all the time. Go to a public place where people are interacting. How do we know that the couple, sitting across from us in a restaurant, are attracted to each other? They are both leaning toward each other; they are making eye contact; they are crossing their legs. If someone were to carefully observe them, there would be numerous ways their physiology matched or mirrored the other. This sends a signal to the other person, “I’m with you. We are connecting. I’m like you.” It also sends a signal to those who are observing. Have you ever walked into a room and knew the people in the room were having an intimate conversation, and you felt like an intruder? You didn’t hear their words, but you knew instinctively that you interrupted something. You were reading their physiology.

Imagine you are talking with someone, he glances at his watch frequently, doesn’t maintain eye contact, and he isn’t matching or mirroring. He is sending a signal. It’s not one of rapport. More than likely, you’ll cut the conversation short and let him go about his business.

Some people are masters, consciously or unconsciously, of matching and mirroring other people’s physiology. These people are often social, well liked, and popular. But if they are using this skill to manipulate people, they are probably not very popular and are likely to be seen as a fake or phony. This is a powerful tool when used with integrity, but it can backfire if it is used in negative ways.

THE DETAILS

1. Mirroring creates a deeper connection than matching. Matching is more subtle and easier to do. If you wish to establish a deeper connection, you might consider matching first and then moving toward mirroring.

2. Areas to match and mirror: breathing, posture, blinking, hand movement. You can match and mirror more than one aspect of someone’s physiology.

3. Think specifics. If you match someone’s breathing, ask yourself: where are they breathing? High in the chest? In the middle? Low? Is their breathing deep, shallow, fast, slow? If you want to practice, try doing this with a baby or child who is upset or being hyper. Match her breathing, when you get into sync for a while begin to slow your breathing. If you are in rapport with the child, she will begin to match your breathing. Her breathing will slow, and she will begin to calm down. You have changed her physiology and mood by changing her breathing. Be careful with this one, you might find that parents will begin to call you to babysit.

4. Hand movements are important to watch. If a person you are talking to doesn’t use hand movements, note that and don’t use hand movements. Doing so could break rapport rather than establish it. If someone does use hand movements, match your movements to hers. Be aware of what the person you are talking to does with her hands and match as closely as you can.

5. Watch head angles, shoulders, how a person sits. I slouch. One of my best friends sits up very straight. When I’m with him, I notice that I tend to sit up straighter.

6. Blinking is one of the most subtle ways of getting into rapport with someone. Most people aren’t aware of their blinking patterns. I’ve tried this with people who blink rapidly, and I find it tiring and distracting. I learned something about myself: I don’t blink a lot.

These are a few suggestions. You’ll discover more as you begin to notice other people’s physiology.

Part two explores using tonality and words to create rapport.

Maryland Needs a Cat Hurricane Up the Chesapeake River to Clean It Up

The Chesapeake River is starting to be cleaned up due to hard work and careful environmental controls. But what Maryland needs now is a large category hurricane to help flush out the river, which would bring 25 inches of rain into the liberal and democratic area of Maryland.

This would definitely cleaned up the Chesapeake River. It needs to be power flushed and the only way that can be done is by Mother Nature. Many Christians are considering praying for just a large category hurricane to go up the Chesapeake River and flood the area in order to clean the Chesapeake River basin.

That might not be a bad idea because such a big power flush would indeed provide a massive water flow to the sea. Hopefully the large category hurricane would have slower wind speeds, as it reached inland and therefore it would not blow the roof off of too many liberals or Democrats homes to live there.

But a large hurricane could destroy quite a few of those fairly expensive boats, which were bought by lobbyists and politicians living on the Chesapeake Rive and sponging off the government. And that would be very bad for those poor boats, I feel sorry for them. But, as it has been said Maryland wants to clean up its Chesapeake River basin and therefore he needs a power flush in the area. Bring it on! Consider this in 2006.

Creativity Isn’t Just for Kids; It’s for Salespeople, Too!

So it’s been a while since you’ve played house or made art out of macaroni noodlesthat doesn’t mean that you aren’t creative! With effort and continued practice, ANYONE can be creative, and ANYONE can use this creativity to set their company and product apart from their competitors.

“Why is creativity so important?”

Being creative means continually presenting yourself and your company in new and interesting ways, and enticing customers in a way that your competition can’t duplicate (if you’re good, they’ll try).

Creativity is one of the strongest and most valuable traits you can have as a salesperson, because it increases your value within your company and among your customers. It is that value that will change you from an average salesperson to a superb salesperson. That distinction will make it easy for customers to choose who to do business withyou!

“How can I be creative?”

There are countless venues in sales for you to display and expand your creativity:

1.) Think of original questions to engage your prospects.

2.) Discover innovative marketing strategies like cooperative marketing and guerrilla marketing to boost your sales and increase your source of leads.

3.) Develop unique problem solving skills to effectively help your customers with products.

4.) Illustrate how valuable you and your company are with attractive presentations.

5.) Capture attention with memorable voicemail messages, charming emails and appealing fax cover sheets.

“Where do I start?”

Start small and remember that it takes continuous practice to be consistently creative in sales.

Set a goal to have a daily ‘idea quota’. Begin by aiming for one new idea per day and eventually challenge yourself to think of more. Write down EVERY idea you think of, regardless of how foolish or impractical it may initially seem. You never know what ideas will bring you success and which ones are not feasible. Don’t discount your ideas, just write them down!
Keeping a journal with a book or word processor will give you the freedom and privacy to track your thoughts and conceptualize your ideas. How will your idea work? Who does your idea target? How will they react to your idea? Write down any questions and solutions you can think of to nurture and expand your ideas.
Make the commitment to continually meet your daily quota and YOU WILL SEE RESULTS!

Here’s how it works: when you know that you need to come up with one new idea every single day, you will find yourself constantly thinking of ways to fulfill your goal. Your search for a new idea will be in the back of your mind as you go about your day.

You will develop a heightened awareness of daily objects and occurrences that could potentially boost sales. You will discover that sometimes the best ideas are right in front of you, and will begin observing other businesses and industries. You will start to ask yourself, “How can I use that in MY industry and at MY company?”

Eventually, ideas will gather and mature in your mind with little effort. You will find yourself standing in the shower one morning when the perfect idea presents itself. It will be these serendipitous moments that will propel you into greater sales success.

Your creativity and fresh concepts will be noticed by others and will distinguish you from your competition. You will offer solutions in a way that no other company can. Your customers will see the unique value you and your company have and will feel drawn to you.

When it is time for them to decide who to do business with, YOU will stand out and YOU will get the sale!

Marzipan Candy And Covered Sweets

Pastry chefs have used marzipan candy for many centuries to create a whole host of sweets. For instance, chef’s have been using this delicious treat to fill cakes and cover them instead of using a more traditional frosting. Marzipan looks beautiful and colorful as a cake decoration, but it can also be used to create figurines. Creating these small figures serves a dual purpose as they not only look good, but they are edible as well. This flexibility is one of the reasons it is surging in popularity. You can use it in the creation of a variety of tasty treats.

Marzipan is made up of ground almonds, glucose, and sugar. These ingredients create a dough that can be colored easily and molded to create what is known as edible art. This art is used for many types of celebrations or special occasions. People will marvel at how unique it looks and be completely surprised when they are told to bite into it. Much to their surprise the marzipan candy has a sweet, rich flavor.

The marzipan composition must contain approximately 25% almonds to truly be considered marzipan. If it does not, it would technically be known as just an almond paste. It does take a little care to make it just right, but once you have the recipe down you will be making it all the time. You can decorate your child’s birthday cake or make dessert for your next family meal.

How Else Can Marzipan Be Used?

Sample some marzipan to see if it has the flavor you like. Try some different items that have been covered in it to get your own ideas on how to use it. Are you planning a baby shower? Try using some marzipan candy as decorations on the tables. Then send them out with the thank you notes for an extra special touch. Your creativity will be much appreciated by your family and friends.

Marzipan is not limited to being used to decorate cakes. It is also used to cover fruits to create quite a sweet treat. Nowadays chefs are even using marzipan to cover vegetables. You can create an enormous amount of unique items by using this versatile covering. You can create the more common items, or you can be adventurous. Your imagination is all that limits you when creating marzipan candy.
