Bodyrockers - Rocking and Dancing!

I have to admit I like this album by Bodyrockers. It takes me back to when I was in my teens. I was into heavy metal/hard rock as well as your typical pop radio music. The singers voice is very much like the voices from countless heavy metal/hard rock vocalists from the 80’s. I definitely like the combination of the guitars and the electronic beats. Much better done than Scissor Sisters did with their album. I don’t know what the big deal with that album was anyway this album actually Rocks! The unfortunate thing is this album has not received much hype. What’s up?

The big track on here is I Like The Way (You Move). It starts with the big drum beats and the track comes into full force with the vocals. Very rocking and very danceable. There are plenty of remixes of this track as well which are by big name remixers so this track is definitely targeted to the club/dance market.

I like what they have done with Handel On Your Face. Sort of reminds me of a raw and rockish KTEL Hooked On Classics track a bit with the classic samples but the track is actually much better than the any of the tracks from the cheesy compilations of the 80s.

The next big track on the album is Round And Round. This is another rocking vocal track with their trademark big beats. The lyrics go “You’ve got me runining round and round and round ain’t nobody like you in the whole wide world guess what i’m a sucker for a run around girl”. Sort of reminds me of Ratt meets ZZ Top. A very fun track!

Overall like I said before this album is definitely worth checking out. If you like the sound of AC/DC with your dance and electronica beats then this album will definitely satisfy you.

How To Manually Tune a Guitar

Need to Learn How to manually TUNE A GUITAR? No problem! It’s something ALL Guitar Players need to know.

Let’s say you have already tuned the top string (6th string).

Step 1:Press down on the 6th string at the 5th fret and you will get an A note. This note should correspond to an open 5th string as shown in the diagram.

Step 2:Strike the 6th string, 5th fret and an open 5th string. Both strings should be exactly the same. If not, the 5th string must be adjusted.

A good tip is to hold your finger on the fret and use your other hand to twist the string. Both at the same time. Do this until both strings sound identical.

These 2 easy steps can be repeated for the rest of the strings. With the 5th string, press down on the 5th string on the 5th fret and you will get a D. This note should correspond to an open 4th string. Therefore when you strike the 5th string, 5th fret and an open 4th string, both strings should sound exactly the same. If not, the 4th string must be adjusted.

The 3rd string however must be played at the 4th fret in order to equal an open 2nd string. Many guitarists use this tuning technique when they suspect a string has gone out of tune.

The music of “Essex” charts the story of the Nantucket whaleship with ambition and imagination.

The story of the Essex was as well known in its time as that of the Titanic today. Essex was a whaling ship that left the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts in 1819 on a two-and-a-half-year voyage to the South Pacific to hunt sperm whales. The ship, however met a tragic end when it capsized after being attacked and hit by a sperm whale. Though the crew members survived the attack, they fell prey to dehydration, starvation and strife, and most of them died, with just eight of the twenty-one men aboard surviving to tell the story of the cataclysm in all its gory entirety.

Inspired by Nathaniel Philbrick’s novel, In the Heart of the Sea, Jonathan Geer set out to craft the visceral story in musical terms. Geer’s music displays an “admirable and unabashed versatility which has more than a touch of Mike Oldfield about it” says Leonard’s Lair. As he read Philbrick’s novel, Geer was immediately captivated by the story and the culture of the Nantucket whaling industry. “Their way of life was so harsh and fascinating,” says Geer. “It’s hard to imagine living like that–hunting down whales in the Pacific for years at a time away from your home and family. I wanted to capture a sense not only of the wonder I experienced reading the story, but also of the isolation these men felt out on the open sea.”

If you had to pin down the style of “Essex” you might call it a “fusion of instrumental Bjork and Chopin” as Matt Howarth from Sonic Curiosity does. Geer’s music blends together many styles and crosses over myriad boundaries of genre to deliver a debut that is filled with a “valiant humanity” (Matt Howarth).

Jonathan hails from the epic state of Texas. He spent his formative years in Waxahachie, the cultural and social hub of the state. In 2001, Jonathan graduated with a degree in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. When he isn’t composing he keeps himself busy teaching private piano lessons and leading the music at Church of the Good Shepherd in Arlington. In addition to working with up and coming Dallas area filmmakers, Geer also composed the music for an internet promo trailer of I Heart Huckabees featuring Naomi Watts.

You may not have heard of Geer or the Essex, but if you let that stop you from picking up this fantastic debut you’d be missing out on a unique and creative gem. Hear what Foxy Digitalis calls “an upper crusty breath of fresh air in this noisy, fast-paced, make-a-buck music business.” Visit www.essexalbum.com for more details.

The Formula: How To Get A Record Deal

The Formula: How To Get A Record Deal

by Matty G

Actually, anybody that tells you there is an exact formula you can follow to get signed is lying. The truth is, there is no exact formula that will land you a record deal, period. This may be disappointing for some to hear: I know I was disappointed when I first heard the truth.

Although a record deal can sometimes come about just by being in the right place at the right time, there are several things you can do to maximize the possibility of attracting a major label or production company to get them interested in signing you.

First and foremost, be ready! Make sure your skills are developed to the point that they can compete with the best the industry has to offer. A&R, managers, and the like are subject to hearing some pretty awful stuff. If you can offer something that sounds amazing, it should greatly increase your chances of getting signed. Remember if your stuff is not as good or better than what’s already out there, the only thing your demo will have a good shot at is the office garbage can.

If you have to spend money somewhere, spend it on production and mixing. This can’t be stressed enough. It all boils down to having good product. You can do everything in your power to attract attention to your music, but If it sucks nobody is going to care. Although some label A&R claim they can hear talent through low budget production, in my experience it pays to have the best sounding product you can. Because it is sometimes extremely difficult to get heard at all, it makes sense not to blow it when you finally do get a chance by delivering the musical equivalent of nails on a chalk board.

Now that you’ve got the skills and a tight product, you should be doing everything in your power to create a buzz for yourself. In order to do this you’re going to need a plan and a team to help you carry it out. You should be doing shows, selling CD’s, trying to get some radio support (even if it’s just college radio), and doing anything and everything else you can to get some kind of following.

It helps to have an established following, a good street team, and some strong independent sales when seeking a record deal. The more you do on your own, the less the label has to do, and ultimately the happier they are. In fact, A&R will often seek you out (eg. come to your show to hear what all the fuss is about) if you’ve done a really good job of promoting yourself.

Next you are going to need a manager. Now you might be thinking you want to manage yourself. Think again. Your buddy that follows you around to all your shows, again, bad choice. At this point, you should be seriously considering seeking out a professional manager. The right manager will make all the difference when it comes to getting signed. What I mean by the right manager is one who digs your music and will really hustle to get you put on. This manager should also have some pretty good industry connections; otherwise the help he can offer you will be limited.

As well as a personal manager, you’ll need a good entertainment attorney to negotiate all your contracts (including the one with your manager) so you don’t get screwed. Also, a good entertainment lawyer (one that actually has industry connections) will be able to help get your music into the right hands as well. Make sure the lawyer you retain is working for you, not the label or your manager!

Ok, so let’s recap. You’ve honed your skills, produced a tight product, created a strong buzz, and got yourself a good personal manager and lawyer. Now what? Well, from this point on your manager will basically put a plan of action together for you and together you will carry it out. You should now be well on your way to your first record deal. This can be a long road, so it’s important to keep a positive mental attitude. Make sure everyone around you (your team) also stays positive. The music business isn’t for the faint of heart! GoodLuck!

A Brief History Of Gibson Guitars

Gibson guitars have been around forever. It’s funny, but although Gibson has produced some of the most amazing guitars in history, perhaps the company’s largest contribution to music has been through their advancements in pickup technology. Gibson’s first electric guitar the ES-150 was produced in 1936, and is still considered one of the best sounding electric jazz guitars in the world.

In 1946 Gibson introduced the P-90 single coil pickup, which was eventually used on the first Les Paul model in 1952. The Les Paul was Gibson’s first solid body electric guitar. In 1957 Gibson introduced the legendary Humbucker pickup on the Les Paul model, and an instant classic was born. The P-90 and the Humbucker quickly became the pickups of choice for Gibson’s expanding line of solid body electric guitars.

1961 marked the introduction of one of Gibson’s most successful models ever, the double cutaway SG. This was followed by the Firebird, and Flying V models, each a classic in its own right. In addition to electrics, Gibson produces some of the finest acoustic guitars available.

Gibson’s commitment to excellence, and support of top musicians is demonstrated most deeply through its well known Custom Shop. The Custom Shop produces specialty instruments for artists, and discerning musicians. In addition, many well known historic classics have been faithfully reproduced by the Gibson Custom Shop, allowing a whole new generation of guitarists to experience Gibson’s hallmark guitars.

U2 Tickets

In the fall of 1976, a popular high school student Paul Hewson observed a note on the notice board of Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin . It was from a 14 year old student Larry Mullen and he had asked for some music lovers to come and join a band. Paul’s immediately answered the call and so did three other lads, Dave Evans, Dick Evans and Adam Clayton. A five-piece band was organized with the name of “Feedback”. However, Dick Evans left the band to join another one after some time. The band altered their name to “The Hype” but ultimately they set on to ” U2″.It was this name which took them to the heights of the sky and made it one of the hottest band of 1980’s.

17 th March 1978 was an unforgettable day for U2 as they got their first major break by wining a music talent contest on St. Patrick’s Day in Limerick . One of the judges of the contest was Jackie Heyden working for CBS Records. Observing the electrifying performance of the boys, he became an immediate fan of U2. It was Jackie Heyden who first took U2 to the studio for recording their debut demo. Although it was not so successful it was still a real confidence booster for the young men.

Their thrilling music and breathtaking performances soon managed to amass crowds of dedicated fans. Through the combination of devotion and passion they rose to be the most popular rock and roll bands of 80’s. The zealous struggle of U2 allowed them to nab a respectable place in the music world during the era of synthesized pop and heavy metal music.

They launched their debut album in 1979 with the name “U 2 three”, which grabbed the top place in Ireland music charts. Later when it was released in England , it was a disappointing failure.

The next year was filled with extensive touring worldwide for the band. In a couple of years two of their albums were in the market, naming “The Boy” and “October”, and the boys were now recognized in Ireland . Nevertheless, U2 really hit the big time with the release of their album “War”, released in March 1983. The “New Year’s Day” single became chart topper in England .

U2 was on the flow and their records were selling like hot cake throughout the world. Their 7 th LP “The Joshua Tree” did record breaking selling in England and remained the big seller in 22 other countries. The fame of U2 was swelling uncontrollably and they amassed millions of dollars from world over.

Next albums were “Achtung Baby”,1991, “Zooropa”,1993, “Pop”1997and their latest album ” How to Dismantle a Atomic Bomb”,2004, which are still remembered by millions of rock music lovers.

There has been no deterioration in the fame of U2 till the present day. Several U2 concerts are still due during this summer in Spain, England, France, Italy, Holland, Switzerland and other European countries. Millions of fans are excited about these concerts all over the world, as can be judged by the fact that most of the tickets have been sold out.

U2 has been maneuvering the rock music scenario constantly for over two complete decades which is an achievement of sorts. They have chartered success on their own terms on both the artistic and business sides in the music industry. And it seems apparent to thousands of their fans that their sun of limitless fame might never set!

How to Take the Labour out of Language Learning

Oh yes, it is possible. Let me show you some of the ways.

First of all commit to enjoyment and make the decision that it’s going to be fun. Look for ways of making it pleasurable. Tell people what a great time you are having. Believe it and enjoy. The above could apply to anything of course. It might be another learning situation, a new job, helping at a jumble sale, organising a coach trip for your son’s football team.

Secondly - be positive. Remarks like “I’m hopeless, I’ll never learn this” tend to be self fulfilling prophesies. Better to say something like ” I am getting better and better at learning words”. Stop yourself when you hear yourself saying, ” I can’t ” about anything. Change it to a positive affirmation in the present tense. “I am becoming more and more confident at speaking”.

Thirdly try out some of these activities:

Use colour when writing words i.e. one colour for masculine words and another for feminine words, another colour for verbs, another for adjectives etc. This helps them to stand out and stay in your memory.

Start drawing and don’t say, “I can’t draw”. Everybody can in some form or other and “practice makes perfect”. Make the drawings funny, make them silly, laugh, have fun, show them to your friends. Be inventive. The act of drawing and thinking what to draw will help you recall these words later. And you never know you may discover hidden talents!
Plan what you are going to do. How much time can you spend? Five minutes a day is better than 30 minutes before your next class. How many words are you going to learn? Be reasonable. Make it possible. One word a day learnt thoroughly is better than aiming for 10 a day and never achieving it. Set yourself up for success.

Word association can help too i.e. el gato is cat in Spanish. Think of a cat sitting in the middle of a cream gateau.

Music is an aid to learning. Baroque music is particularly helpful. Or dance round the room chanting sentences or verbs (close the curtains and make sure that you’re alone in the house maybe!).

Last but not least find ways of listening to the language even if you cannot understand all or much of what is said.
Speaking another language means that you can talk to people more easily. You will find it opens doors in many ways and helps you learn about other people. It’s exciting. It’s fun. Enjoy.

P.S. Learning a language? Any problems or difficulties contact me and I will help you.

Master Spanish or Any Other Language in 30 Days or Less!

As in many aspects in life, Second Language Acquisition is part of a process that may extend for several years. How funny and ludicrous it is to find language courses that offer what we would all like to hear, that we can master a new language in only 30 days!

Some of these course providers even go one step beyond and raise the ante by promising students to speak a language with native- like pronunciation in this span of time.

Simply put, this is a blunt lie. Even for people living abroad in a foreign country, it may take several years for them to master the new language, let alone sound like native speakers. All this in spite of being immersed in the best setting for language acquisition to take place. After all, they are surrounded by native speakers of the language for most part of the day, unless they simply stay at home all the time, of course. Every single contact they have with people forces them to interact in the target language in order to get their message across and understand their interlocutors. Every interaction revolves around truly communicative situations (i.e. no one in the street will come to you and ask you: “what are the rules to form the ‘imperfect subjunctive?’”

What is more, after a hard-day’s work with full interaction in the second language, they get home and plan to relax, turn on the TV and there it is again: the foreign language is right there waiting for you! There is no escaping from it! You can run but you can’t hide. It’s at home on the radio, TV or the Internet, when you talk to your neighbors or the mailman; it is on your radio when you go to work, it’s ever present at work, when you go to the market, to the bank, when you eat out etcetera, etcetera and etcetera. This is total and absolute immersion and even in this heaven for the person eager to acquire a second language it may take at least four years for a learner to master this language, and especially in adults, native-like pronunciation is very difficult to acquire.

It is obvious that it is not always feasible or practical for us to leave everything behind and pursue this quest for learning a second language. Does this mean that we are doomed not to ever learn another language? Could we in any way infer that there is no hope of ever mastering a second language? Of course NOT. There are some awesome language courses and programs out there which are based on sound pedagogical principles. However, we must be realistic and objective about our second language learning. Whenever we hear about “the ultimate language course that can gain us proficiency overnight” we should be absolutely skeptical. More often than not, these self-proclaimed “ultimate solutions” are nothing but well-designed marketing ploys aimed at getting as much money from students as possible, in the shortest possible time.

Not surprisingly, they cost an arm and a leg, not because they are good, just because they sell hope; they sell what we want to hear, the magic pill that could make our dreams come true effortlessly. Who wouldn’t like to achieve in one month what’s taken others a lifetime to obtain? I would! However, pragmatically speaking, that is utterly impossible! Being a rather sedentary person with some extra weight, I must admit that I would love to be in very good shape. Nevertheless, I must acknowledge the fact that even if I hired the best personal trainer in the world and went to the best gym in the universe and trained my very hardest and dieted along the way, all of this for a whole month with the supervision and guidance of the best in the field, and even if I quit everything to pursue this objective, the plain and simple fact will remain that I would still not be able to participate in the Olympics after just one month of this severe training.

It would be ridiculous both to expect this to happen and to offer this. After just one month, how could I compete or even train at the same level of world-class athletes who have devoted their entire lives to get ready for that moment? The mere idea of this is just nonsensical! Ironically enough, this is often what second language programs offer and people simply fall for them time and again. What is more, the ones who design these programs are by no means “experts in the field” but just ruthless cunning businessmen who want quick profits by selling sand castles no matter how much pain and frustration they will eventually cause.

My humble piece of advice to any serious second language learner or learner-to-be is to be cautious and skeptical whenever tempted by such appealing offers as the ones already mentioned. As in the fable “The tortoise and the hare,” remember that “slow and steady wins the race.”
