Better Brainpower Through Exercise

Can you boost brain power with exercise? Several relevant studies were reported on at the annual Meeting Of The Society Of Psychophysiological Research in Montreal recently. The findings showed both immediate benefits from exercise, as well as long-term effects. Exercise seems to help your brain work more efficiently and actually make you smarter.

In one study, the thinking ability of subjects was tested. After the tests, they ran on a treadmill for thirty minutes. Then, when their hearts returned to normal resting levels they took the follow-up tests. For all tests the subjects were connected to an elctroencephalogram (EEG), in order to track their brainwaves.

The first thing researchers noted was that exercising had sped up the speed of their decision-making. It was a significant difference. Upon scoring the tests, it was also found that the subjects answered more accurately after the exercise than before.

The study participants were between 18 and 24 years old, but researchers think the findings will hold true for other age groups as well. Another study showed that just ten minutes of moderate exercise each day can improve mood and reduce fatigue. Brainpower specifically wasn’t tested, but it seems likely that less fatigue means better brain power.

Best Exercise For Brain Power?

Most research has focused more on the duration of exercise more than on the specific type. Aerobic exercise seems to be the common element in the studies that have shown improvements in brainpower, however. It seems likely that running, bicycling, swimming, dancing and any other aerobic exercises will have the same effect.

Ten minutes of exercise is apparently enough to have effects on the brain. It’s not clear how much more benefit there may be with longer exercise sessions. Interestingly, while most scientists probably expected to find brain power benefits from long-term exercise programs, the study using treadmills showed an immediate effect as well. In other words, get up and run around, and you can be smarter ten minutes from now.

Many people find that walking is one of the best ways to boost brain power. Apart from the aerobic benefits that are now being explained by recent studies, there seems to be something more. Perhaps it has something to do with the rythmic and relaxing nature of the exercise, but many people report that their clearest and most creative thinking happens when walking.

The benefits of exercise include better sleep, a healthier immune system, weight control, and a lower risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Now you can add better brain power to that list. Why not take a walk today?

Lost About GPS? Here’s Some Direction!

If you’ve been confounded by all the technical jargon andhype surrounding GPS, confusing what’s turning out to be avery useful tool, allow me to shed a little light on yourroadmap to deciding whether or not this technology is foryou! Originally designed with military applications in mind, the technology was made available to mere mortals in hte1980’s for the many and varied uses we’ve found so far forthese special tools. Not only handy for auto navigation, GPSunits have made their way into maritime navigation, backcountry uses, and much, much more!

How does GPS work? GPS (which stands for Global PositioningSystem) allows you to pinpoint your position anywhere on theplanet to within an average of 15 meters, with some unitsdoing much better than that. Twenty-four GPS satellites, paid for and placed in orbit by the Dept. of Defensecourtesy of your tax dollars, send signals back to terrafirma 24/7. These signals are retrieved by your handy dandyGPS receiver which uses three sources (satellites) totriangulate this information and compute your actualposition. If there are four data sources, even altitude canbe determined. Since there are normally eight satellites inline of sight from anywhere on earth, the opportunity foraccurate positioning exists. Other things that can bedetermined besides latitude, longitude, and altitude wouldinclude things like speed, sunrises and sunsets, bearing, distance and more. While they will work in any weather, somehindrances would be electronic interference, buildings, andcertain terrain. A good rule of thumb is that the units willgenerally not perform underwater, indoors, or underground. There are currently two Global Navigation Satellite Systemsin use. Besides GPS, there is the Russian Global NavigationSatellite System (GLONASS) Protocols are constantly beingrefined to enhance the abilities of these systems. A brightlight on the horizon is Galileo, scheduled to go online in2008, which promises even greater accuracy andfunctionality.

So how do I know which GPS unit is for me? Quite a fewchoices now exist for consumers in the GPS marketplace.Whether you need a handheld unit for backpacking or boating,or one for your automobile (they are becoming an attractiveoption!) or for one of a myriad of uses, there are severalreputable manufacturers of quality GPS units out there tohelp you find your way through the maze of choices. Nameslike Magellan, Garmin, Rino, Etrex and Meridian lead themarket, and are readily available. Benign Tumors Of The Cervix

Endocervical polyps
Endocervical polyps are the most common benign neoplasms of the cervix. Please note that the word neoplasm refers to a cancerous growth. They are focal hyperplastic (abnormal cell growth) protrusions of the endocervical folds, including the epithelium and substantia propria. They are most common in the fourth to sixth decades of life and usually are asymptomatic but may cause profuse leukorrhea or postcoital spotting. (blood after orgasm)
Grossly, they appear as typical polypoid structures protruding from the cervical os. At times, endometrial polyps protrude through the cervical os. They cannot be distinguished from endocervical polyps by gross appearance. Microscopically, a variety of histologic patterns are observed, including
(1) typical endocervical mucosal
(2) inflammatory (granulation tissue)
(3) fibrous
(4) vascular
(5) pseudodecidual
(6) mixed endocervical and endometrial
(7) pseudosarcomatous.
Treatment is removal, which can usually be accomplished by twisting the polyp with a dressing forceps if the pedicle is slender. Smaller polyps may be removed with punch biopsy forceps. Polyps with a thick stalk may require surgical removal.

Microglandular hyperplasia
Microglandular hyperplasia refers to a clinically polypoid growth measuring 1-2 cm. It occurs most often in women who are on oral contraceptive therapy or Depo-Provera and in pregnant or postpartum women. It reflects the influence of progesterone.
Microscopically, it consists of tightly packed glandular or tubular units, which vary in size, lined by a flattened-to-cuboidal epithelium with eosinophilic granular cytoplasm containing small quantities of mucin. Nuclei are uniform, and mitotic figures are rare. Squamous metaplasia and reserve cell hyperplasia are common. An atypical form of hyperplasia can be mistaken for clear cell carcinoma. Unlike clear cell carcinoma, it lacks stromal invasion, has scant mitotic activity, and lacks intracellular glycogen

Squamous papilloma
Squamous papilloma is a benign solid tumor typically located on the ectocervix. It arises most commonly as a result of inflammation or trauma.
Grossly, the tumors are usually small, measuring 2-5 mm in diameter. Microscopically, the surface epithelium may show acanthosis, parakeratosis, and hyperkeratosis. The stroma has increased vascularity and a chronic inflammatory infiltrate. Treatment is removal. The squamous papilloma resembles a typical condyloma acuminatum but lacks the koilocytes microscopically.

Smooth muscle tumors (leiomyomas)
These benign neoplasms may originate in the cervix and account for approximately 8% of all uterine smooth muscle tumors. They are similar to tumors in the fundus. When located in the cervix, they usually are small, ie, 5-10 mm in diameter.
Symptoms depend on size and location. Microscopically, leiomyomas resemble the typical smooth muscle tumor found in the uterine corpus. Treatment is required only for those patients who are symptomatic. The cervical leiomyoma is usually part of the spectrum of uterine smooth muscle tumors.

Mesonephric duct remnants
When present, mesonephric duct remnants are typically located at the 3-o’clock and the 9-o’clock positions, deep within the cervical stroma. They usually are incidental findings and are present in approximately 15-20% of serially sectioned cervices. As the name implies, mesonephric duct remnants are vestiges of the mesonephric or Wolffian duct. Usually, they are only a few millimeters in diameter and seldom are grossly visible.
Microscopically, they consist of a proliferation of small round tubules lined by epithelium that is cuboidal to low columnar. The tubules tend to cluster around a central duct. The cells lining the tubules contain no glycogen or mucin, but the center of the tubule may contain a pink material that contains glycogen or mucin.

Endometriosis
When present in the cervix, endometriosis is usually an incidental finding. Grossly, it may appear as a bluish-red or bluish-black lesion, typically 1-3 mm in diameter. Microscopically, the implants are typical endometriosis, consisting of endometrial glands, endometrial stroma, and hemosiderin-laden macrophages. The implants usually gain access to the cervix during childbirth or previous surgery.

Papillary adenofibroma
This neoplasm is uncommon. Grossly, it appears as a polypoid structure. Microscopically, the neoplasm contains branching clefts and papillary excrescences lined by mucinous epithelium with foci of squamous metaplasia. A compact, cellular, fibrous tissue composed of spindle-shaped and stellate fibroblasts supports the epithelium. The stroma is devoid of smooth muscle, and mitoses are rare. Similar growths occur in the endometrium and the fallopian tubes.

Heterologous tissue
Heterologous tissue includes cartilage, glia, and skin with appendages. This type of tumor rarely occurs in the cervix. While they may arise de novo, these tumors probably represent implants of fetal tissue from a previous aborted pregnancy.
Hemangiomas
Hemangiomas in the cervix are rare in occurence and are similar to those found elsewhere in the body.

Belly Dancing for the Midlife Soul

I have been a student and performer of the Middle Eastern
belly dance for 12 years. I began this dance form at age 52
when a friend of mine told me she was taking an Adult
Education class in Middle Eastern belly dancing. Here was
an opportunity right in my own community. I was going to
live out my adult fantasy - to be a belly dancer! And so I
joined the class and have been a student ever since. I am
now 64 and have no signs of slowing down.

In 1999, I started to teach a belly dance class to women
over the age of 55. New classes begin on Thursday, May 10
from 10:15-11:30am at Oasis Continuing Education for Mature
Adults at the Robinson/May company in Mission Valley.

And why do I teach this class? Because I love helping the
women re-discover the magic and mystery of true feminine
energy. Something miraculous happens to these women when
they belly dance; they begin to emerge like an earth
mother, a little girl, a prom queen and a seductress all in
one. I help them to realize what I learned 12 years ago -
that when we belly dance we get in touch with the profound
wisdom and beauty of who we really are - no matter what our
age or size of our belly.

I always tell them to love their belly…besides it is the
only one they have! Eventually the women move towards
greater self- acceptance and confidence. They learn to be
empathic in response to the energetic music. They learn to
lead, to follow and to let go.

Belly Dance is improvisational. There are basic moves to
the dance, but once learned the dance becomes a personal
expression of the dancer. Characteristic of today’s dance
are movements of the pelvis and undulations of the body.
These movements are not socially taught in our culture.
Instead, there are restrictions placed on the movement of
certain body parts and how much they may be moved. Belly
dance breaks through those barriers, freeing up the body so
women can fully express their feminine self.

Dance is a metaphor for life. In dance, we move through
time and space, just as we do while we live out the passage
of our lives. The belly dance is truly a unification of
body, heart and mind. It’s also fun to get dressed up in a
“costume”, exercise our hips and our belly, and do this in
a non-threatening atmosphere of acceptance of our female
sensuality.

And finally, the belly dance helps women to return to where
life begins, our primordial womb. What a wonderful way to
find the connection between our heart and soul and the
expression of our body.

How Ronzoni Italian Foods Helped My Dad Learn English

My dad likes to say, he was made in Italy, but born in Brooklyn New York. You see his parents left Palermo, Sicily in February 1955 and sailed by boat to America. My nonna (Italian for grandmother) was six months pregnant at the time and was quite ill through out the month’s passage. Like most of the immigrants however, all she cared about was that her son be born in America, and thus immediately become a United States citizen. My grandparents, immediately settled in Sicilian-Italian neighborhood called Bensonhurst, and the language of choice was Sicilian, of course. By the time my dad was 10 months old, he was saying words in Sicilian and by the time he was a year-old, he was able to put sentences together. That’s why it’s no surprise to me that my dad was able to learn the English language as quickly as he did.

At my nonna’s encouragement, from the moment, he was able to manipulate a pencil, my dad began tracing and then copying the letters on the grocery boxes my grandmother brought home every day from the supermarket. He chuckles every time he gets to tell the story how Ronzoni products, not only filled his stomach, but his mind as well. Dad says he used to get very upset if his mom put the groceries away before he had had a chance to trace and/or copy the letters on the grocery boxes. Nonna would have to take all the boxes out that she had stored away in the pantry in order to satisfy my dad.

Nonna, who naturally did not speak any English, would sit with my dad, and teach him the names of the letters. The Italian language consists of 21 letters however, (there is no H, J, K, W, X) as opposed to 26 letters in the English language. So he did not learn the names of these letters until he began first grade ( there was no kindergarten class available at that time).

Dad likes to brag about his perfect penmanship because the only “A” he received in his first semester of school was in penmanship, a direct result of his meticulous tracing and copying of the letters off the grocery products.

How did all this lead to dad’s learning the English language, so quickly? “The familiarity with the letters and their sounds made learning quite easy for me” he says. The only thing that he had little trouble with was learning the names and proper pronunciation of English’s H, J, K, W and X, but even that he said didn’t take too long. I asked him if there was the equivalent of “Sesame Street’ in his time that helped accelerate his learning the English language.”The only ‘Sesame Street’ he knew of was downtown someplace. We didn’t even have a TV, he chuckles. What we did have instead were mothers and fastidious nuns who were persistent and indefatigable in their teaching efforts, despite the huge classes they were assigned.”

“After teaching the students the names and pronunciation of each letter, the nuns then began to teach us the sounds of the vowels and the consonants. Only after the vast majority of the class had mastered the pronunciations did they then begin teaching us three letter words. Each word was presented with a picture to help us remember the spelling, pronunciation and its meaning. Each student individually had to pronounce the word, spell the word and pronounce the word again, before we could move on.
Once we were familiar with enough persons, places and things we began to learn simple verbs like run, hit, jump, catch, fall and so forth. We drew the sentences as well, what I mean is, if the sentence was: ‘The boy hit the ball,’ we would have a picture of a boy, a bat and the ball. It was constant reinforcement. Looking back I presume that they were trying to engage as many of our senses as possible, which I understand, accelerates learning.”

My dad is genuinely excited about this topic. He makes it clear though that he dislikes the teaching modalities used in elementary school today. He particularly loathes kid-code, a technique which teaches kids to spell words, like they are sound. To clarify the reason why my dad is so “up to snuff” on the way in which some elementary schools work is that though my dad once was a very successful investment banker in 1994 he was struck with a malignant brain tumor that left him disabled and thus he became Mr. Mom. His being able to stay home allowed him to become somewhat like my personal tutor and in turn he was able to see the way in which I both regressed and progressed in school. Kid code he states was something that he wishes would have never been invented.

“If one was teaching Italian, this would be an excellent way to teach kids to read because every letter and combination of letters in the Italian language is pronounced the same way each and every time. In English, we have so many homonyms and different pronunciations for the same words, as well as mysterious silent letters, which are confusing enough, but when combined with the kid-spell it is deleterious to the student’s learning.”
I wish that I could have been in one of those classes that forbid the enforcement of kid code but unfortunately I was not that lucky. Kid code for me as well as my fellow classmates form back then still have a hard time spelling sometimes the most simple of words. Though in my mind there is no reason to use such a method I believe some teachers rely on kid code to see what levels of spelling their students are at. Other teachers however I feel use this methodology out of pure laziness which in all honesty is what I believe the case was with my teachers.

“What was wrong with Dick and Jane, my dad asks rhetorically.” I answered anyway, “I don’t know,” I told him, “I learned kid-code, remember.” “I remember, and that’s why you and Al’s Gals (my girlfriends affectionately call themselves Al’s Gals to this day) can’t spell for beans,” he says. I can’t argue the fact we are a generation of poor spellers and I think he’s correct, in that kid-code is to blame, at least to some extent. “Dad let’s talk about ‘Dick and Jane’ if you don’t mind.” “Ann Marie, they were primers used in the elementary school’s early grades. Every page was illustrated and had no more than a sentence or two. So even if you couldn’t figure out what was being said in the written word, you would almost certainly be able to infer it from the illustration. I think the same could also be said about the Dr. Seuss books, though the preposterous stories sometimes, I think had a negative effect.”

“How long did the nuns continue to use ‘Dick and Jane’” I queried. “For the first grade only, then we had anthologies which contained slightly more sophisticated language, still accompanied by illustrations. At some point during the second grade, Mrs. McNamara introduced us to new single volume story books, still with illustrations, and this process continued grade after grade. By the time, I had completed the fifth grade I had a well-rounded vocabulary and good reading comprehension skills. Early on in the sixth grade, a friend’s dad began to take us to the public library each Saturday morning. It was about a mile walk. There was a four book limit, which we argued about with the librarian, every visit. About the same time, I began writing short stories for my classmates’ entertainment and you’ll get a kick out of this, the girls began asking me to write love notes for them to give to their boyfriends. I was the Cyrano de Bergerac of my time.”

I recently was privy to a conversation my dad had with two former classmates from the sixth grade, who later married. The woman was one of my dad’s former clients, for whom he had performed his literary magic. Apparently, the woman had never told her husband about the true author of many of her letters, until that conversation. The three of them laughed hysterically when the proverbial cat was let out of the bag.
I asked dad if there were anything else that might have contributed to his learning and mastering English as well as he had. I was surprised at his answer. “I think nonna had a influence on me. (Ironically nonna had never gone beyond the third grade.) She not only helped me learn the alphabet, she would sit with me and we would read the assignments together. Since at that point, I knew more than her I had become the teacher. That was another way to reinforce what I had learned in class, moreover, teaching nonna contributed greatly to my love for reading.”

As I contemplate how dad learned to master English at such a young age, without the slightest knowledge of the language, what stands out the most is, nonna’s participation in the process. This is certainly an element that’s missing in our society today, primarily because of two worker families. As a future elementary school teacher, I plan on replicating the teaching methods of those nuns that taught my dad and countless others not only how to read but to love reading. If the “Dick and Jane” books are not part of the curriculum, where ever I begin teaching, I will still use the inherent method of “Dick and Jane.” To learn more about me and my family visit our website lunchbagnotes.com

Translation Service Now Open All Hours

Thanks to an exciting new service being launched by antipodean translation company New Lingo, no business need ever be lost for words again - whatever the time of day or night! For New Zealand’s leading Internet language services company recently added a new string to its corporate bow, with the launch of a 24-hour translation service.

Given the 24/7 culture which prevails in international business circles, this news will undoubtedly be sweet music to the ears of New Lingo’s many clients worldwide. New Lingo is a perfect example of the new breed of “virtual” company, and its pedigree is impeccable. Established only three years ago, the dynamic language services provider has a well-deserved reputation for excellence, due in no small part to a policy of having every translation independently proof-read. Moreover, with all staff home-based, New Lingo’s operating costs are kept to a minimum - a benefit which is passed directly on to their clients in the form of highly competitive rates.

As language experts who pride themselves on their state-of-the-art translation technology solutions, New Lingo staff are renowned for their ultra-modern approach to business. Indeed, in the words of Christof Schneider, chief of operational improvements at New Lingo: “This new service is just the latest in a series of technology-enabled firsts. It offers organisations which operate under time-critical conditions an immense commercial advantage.” He continues: “It also gives our clients complete peace of mind to know that while they’re sleeping, the documents they require for their meeting the next morning are being translated!” Korean-born project manager Austin Kim explains: “The nature of our business lends itself perfectly to a 24-hour production system. Many of our clients are multi-nationals and operate 24 hours a day themselves. Moreover, our translation team already spans all time zones, so providing a round-the-clock service is simply a natural extension of what we already do.” In-house (and at New Lingo, that means her own house!) German expert, Barbara Bumer adds: “We have a close reciprocal relationship with a respected UK translation company which works really well. Through them we regularly provide translations for prestigious end-clients such as Microsoft, Orange and Honda.”

Impressive names certainly - but equally impressive is what New Lingo itself has achieved in a relatively short timescale. The maths is simple: a network of tried and tested translation professionals, all beavering away during “normal” working hours in their own time zones, but collectively working 24/7. Add to this equation the New Lingo factors of project management experience and state-of-the-art translation tools, and you have a winning formula: a round-the-clock stress-free professional translation service for members of the global business community.

Notebook PCs: Warranty Enhancements

If you’re about to start recommending that your clients buy extended service plans for new notebook PCs, be sure to get a written statement detailing what’s included and not included.

Unfortunately, PC vendors won’t always tell you specifically what’s not included. Sometimes, you’ll only be able to surmise what’s missing by comparing written warranty statements from different PC vendors.

Hazard Coverage

For example, most notebook PC vendors specifically exclude warranty claims arising from obvious neglect issues, such as spilling liquid on a notebook or dropping it. Other notebook PC vendors, for a hefty price, may cover such calamities under limited circumstances.

Also, consider whether your clients’ end users will be traveling with their notebook PCs. Unlike their desktop PCs, which likely stay relatively stationary throughout their life cycle, notebooks go “on the road” a lot.

International Coverage

Some notebook PC vendors include international warranty coverage in the base price of the extended warranty. Others charge extra for this supplemental coverage. Regardless, if your clients’ end users of notebook PCs travel abroad, be sure to ask about specifics.

Just as with a desktop PC, find out whether the notebook PC extended warranty is on-site, whether technicians come to your clients, or whether your clients will need to ship their notebooks back to a service depot for warranty work. Also, ask about promised response times and estimated turnaround times.

The Bottom Line about the Notebook PC

Make sure you have reviewed a price list of available notebook warranty upgrade options. Also, examine the related terms and conditions of what is and isn’t covered under various warranty upgrade plans. Find out if the notebook PC warranty limits coverage under certain circumstances.

Algebra in High School and beyond

Algebra as a Scientific Discipline

Algebra is considered a primary arm of maths which explains how to manage all situations involving numbers and variables. By default, there is so much to articulate about teaching and learning of Algebra as a generalized arithmetic which goes through systematic mathematical procedures such as induction, generalization and proof. So, bit by bit, students get different means to develop their Algebra level, for example by getting the information from tutors or packages, which provide bit by bit solutions. Software Programs designed for algebra studying provide all the available methods for re solving particular problems with a technological touch. Many students are not even aware of the full potential of algebra! They complain about its impracticality ignoring that Algebra, generally math, teaches their mind how to think logically and correctly. The school is the most straight way of finding about algebra, from being a kid till becoming an adult students get their lessons from the teacher. With the advancement of applied science, new techniques have been formulated to learn Algebra, such as using computer software programs which is a more convenient way to learn Algebra. It s a kind of gradual tool to have the information delivered to scholar’s heads.

Areas Handled by Algebra

Same as any other arm of science, Algebra addresses a lot of fields and includes many theories and constructs. Gcf, or Greatest Common Factor , is one such concepts. Gcf means to rewrite the polynomial as a product of simpler polynomials or of polynomials and monomials. Other associated area is solving fractions which enables a person to get a simplified result. non-linear function represents any function which is a solution of a quadratic polynomial. Multiplying and Dividing Radicals is also an critical area of standard Algebra. A person can multiply and divide with radicals only if the index, or root, is the same. Other associated areas are Adding and Subtracting Radicals; a person can add or subtract radical terms only if both the index and the radicand are the same. Matrix operations include adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Among other key areas are finding x-intercept of a line and y-intercept of a line - to get the x-intercept of a line, substitute zero for y in the equation and vice versa for finding y-intercept of a line.
