Most of the farming accidents in the UK are reported during the potato-harvesting season. In early September, a 34-year-old man in Fife was killed while working on a potato harvester that was running on power. This led the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to call upon farmers and contractors to be more careful during the harvesting seasons.

The HSE is also investigating an accident in Lincolnshire where a worker suffered severe cuts by a chopping machine, and one in Cambridgeshire, where a worker crushed his hand in a cleaning machine.

Figures show that in the last five years there have been as many as 82 accidents where workers have died due to grievous injuries. The data also reveals that deaths in the harvest season, which falls between July and October, made up almost half of the total deaths in agricultural sector since 2004-05.

Tony Mitchell of the HSE’s agriculture and food division pointed out that three workers have died in the last seven years and many more have had serious accidents while harvesting. He said that this makes it very important to have a proper procedure in place for cleaning and fixing the machinery and that machines must be switched off before any mending work is undertaken.

Although Mitchell agreed that farmers are under a lot of pressure to reap their crops in time and that weather conditions create a major impediment in the harvesting season, he was quick to remind that the work should not be done at the cost of the farmers’ lives. He said accidents could cause life long disability or even death, and workers must remember that they have their own families to feed.
