Too Many Manufacturers Enter the Gaming Laptops Market

It wasn’t very long ago when only a couple of companies made gaming notebooks. The sales were by no means really amazing but they did make increased profit on each unit than others. I guess that the vast number of people would agree they always wanted a laptop for gaming but it was just out of reach for the masses. If you a power hungry user they were simply the best laptop computers you could get. Having said that the vast number of us probably did not buy laptop computers of this kind because of the cost. As the massive computer companies spot the potential revenues in gaming laptops, the business is altering.

Lowering prices are not usual is this sector so larger companies would be making lots of profit. It is surely a great alternative to higher gross profits. Small manufacturers are unable compete with them in convincing prospects to buy laptop computers. What could local companies possibly do if they are squeezed out of the sector? I know for certain that laptops for gaming will get greatly accessible for many. I think purchasing from an established brand also provides the perception of greater value for money.

The laptops being introduced by branded manufacturers are all contending for the best laptop computer crown. This has the potential to be increasingly promising for local resellers. I am sure consumers that get these kinds of laptops prefer to be able to configure their notebook. I reckon the guys that purchase laptops for gaming generally know what they are searching for. More often than not these types of people are more partial to the tech specs than the styling. Of course from the buyers position, its a good thing. In the end the price will drop more and more consumers would be able to get such new technology. Do not take my word for it however as other things can happen in the notebook market. I reckon technology is getting more better but the new laptop computers should typically remain pricey. Seeing as the big brand manufacturers have already begun marketing gaming laptop computers, I guess we will have to wait to see what results.

Create a Website

CREATE A WEBSITE

Not a common man has turned to be an Internet Millionaire but people do make a living doing what they like on the net, creating and running successful websites.

Think through what you want the Website to accomplish.
Focus on these questions:

1. What is the purpose of the Website?

2. What do I want my clients or customers to derive from the site?

3. What do I expect from this Website?

4. How can I be informative to visitors, but important to my own customers?

5. How can I keep people on the site and keep them coming back?

6. How can I sell on the Internet?

These tips will prove a lot helpful:

Plan Your Site

Keep your designs simple. A simple design will sell more products. Keep your business simple. There must be a good mix of text and graphics with limited page scrolling. A sole proprietorship may be more equitable to you than a corporation (with partners) when you are first starting out. Keep your overhead low. The more money you have to lay out for your business, the less ends up in your pocket. As much as you may want to provide copious amounts of information, people do not want to read it. When you need to provide text, be kind and limit the width of the text. No one wants to simulate watching a sport on a Website.

Back-end driven Content
All successful web sites have content -Catchy Headlines with two important vision ‘You’ & ‘Free’, good articles, inventory for sale, etc. You is what you have for the visitor and Free is offering ‘Freebies’. Focus your Intent on Index main page to meet the visitor’s needs. Some sort of database/CGI type program manages most of this content. These days there are many alternative ways to implement online programs such as the classic CGI/Perl solutions to ASP, PHP, and C; and data base solutions as diverse as MySQL to Oracle. It is wise to choose the simplest solution available for your project. However, you should make sure that it will be able to scale to accommodate your site’s anticipated success. Further, make sure that there is not a ready made, free version solution to your programming problem before you hire a programmer or buy a commercial version. There are many excellent resources that list hundreds of quality, free scripts available for download. One note about the content itself, it needs to not only be of high quality ( there is a lot of competition out there! ) but it needs to be constantly updated. If not daily, weekly updates are a must so that repeat visitors feel as if there is a reason to return. Repeat visitors are a very big key to continual growth. This makes a very good argument to use a programmable solution to manage your content, as the scripts allow you to update content more effectively than you can manually. Chats, Message Boards, E-mail Login, E-greetings are just for the many who sort out for various Interactive contents. To build an audience with content is up to you even without spending huge sum on Web designing or getting into the trap of labeling as ‘Portal’ because many Portals end up just being a mere Website with much hype and hoopla with added unwanted contents.

Check the Download
Speed Time of your site

The main Web page should load in 10-15 seconds or less. The most important aspect of web design may very well be speed. Every successful web site has an integrated design approach that works. Integrated, in that all of the graphics, text, etc. look like they belong together, that they work together to create a whole. Pull up Yahoo in your browser, how fast did it load? By some estimates you only have 30 seconds to grab your visitors interest. Load time - the speed that a site is displayed in a browser is critical. The most successful sites combine graphics optimized for the web with text and (more and more often ) nested tables with background colors to create pleasing interfaces that load quickly.

Appearance

It should be incredibly clean and clear. There should be sufficient white space to make everything look ambient. Keep text in boxes away from the edges. Visitors must be able to read the text. Avoid placing tiny gray text on a black background, or putting text over such a busy background that it’s not readable.

Navigation
Text links are great because they’re quick and easy to use. If you use graphic links, also use text links, and make sure the graphics are optimized. Always have text links as a basic component. Visitors would like no typos or hyper link errors. Opening new pages is now more acceptable than clicking through pages.

About us/ contact us
Your site must have an “About Us” area so people can check your credentials. It must also provide thorough contact information. Visitors expect a business address and several ways to communicate with the site owner.

Staffing Software Bolsters Earth Sciences Staffing Firm Growth

For almost 20 years, Geotemps, a Reno, NV-based earth sciences
staffing firm, has focused on a range of career levels in earth
sciences, mining and minerals. Whether it’s a geologist or an
executive looking for placement, Geotemps handles it - and
everything in between.

With continued growth in mind — and two new offices already
planned for this year, Geotemps knew that improving their
staffing technology would be critical to the success of their
plans. A VCG client since 1996, Geotemps decided in 2005 to
migrate from VCG’s TempWare-V® to StaffSuite® to apply the
latest in staffing software technology to its business
processes.

Lance Taylor, President and CEO of Geotemps, states, “While
there were other solutions out there, we felt that StaffSuite’s
robust database offered the most complete solution.”

To optimize their business growth goals, Taylor wanted to
streamline their current business processes. While TempWare-V
was ‘getting the job done,’ Taylor felt that their growth plans
provided the perfect impetus to implement StaffSuite’s
integrated front and back office functionality.

Kathy Sestanovich, Network Administrator for Geotemps, says,
“We’ve found that our staff can run candidate searches a hundred
times faster with our new StaffSuite software. With this
capability, we can respond immediately to our clients — and
faster response means winning the business.”

Taylor also attributes the speed of the database, a
user-friendly interface and the in-depth searching capabilities
of StaffSuite to improving the front office operational
productivity of their staff. According to Sestanovich, their
staff is now much easier to train. Sestanovich states, “We no
longer have training issues with our staff. StaffSuite lends
itself to quicker and easier adoption by our team.” This is
typical for customers moving to StaffSuite from other staffing
software. In fact, customers have reported that its ease-of-use
and familiar interface reduces training by nearly two-thirds.

Sestanovich adds, “VCG’s software support team is excellent.
They communicate with us at all times. When a case is closed, I
immediately get a follow-up e-mail to make sure the issue has
been resolved.” Such support is unusual in the software
industry, yet is standard for VCG, where independent surveys of
customers have rated VCG’s support services as ‘excellent’ –
well above industry standards.

Geotemps knew that they would have to migrate their information
and VCG provided a smooth transition because of VCG’s data
migration team. Additionally, both Taylor and Sestanovich were
impressed with the implementation consultants that guided them
through the process.

Because Geotemps focuses on a range of career levels, they
needed a database that could quickly code a potential employee’s
skills. Their VCG consultant suggested some ideas to deal with
this issue and Geotemps implemented them. This customization
enables staff to quickly enter a person’s skills without any
hassle.

Looking to the future, Taylor continues to look for ways
technology can support and assist with the company’s growth.

Taylor states, “We are planning on adding the StaffSuite
WorldLink® module to our software and I am very excited about
the integration of our Web site to our database. It will enable
our online image to reinforce the technological advances we are
making.”

It’s easy to see that Geotemps is a forward thinking company,
but it is also a company that contributes to that future. Taylor
says, “Geotemps focuses on employee development. We consider
ourselves ‘career counselors’ and we are very dedicated to
supporting the earth sciences industry’s development.”

Taylor is a supportive member of the Advisory Board to the
Mackay School of Earth Science and Engineering at the University
of Nevada in Reno, and is also a member of the board of trustees
for The Northwest Mining Association. Add numerous other
industry association memberships and support in grass root
efforts in their area and you can see why Geotemps has been
successful for twenty years. VCG’s staffing software will help
them to continue that market success.

More Cool Web Tricks

If you ask most people what frustrates them most about the Internet, many of them will tell you “It’s the little things!”

It seems like all the great tricks and tips that make people exclaim “STOP! How did you do that?” never make it into any manual (at least where I can find them).

My father (and co-author of “Turn Words Into Traffic”) calls it the “reverse oral tradition” of computing, where children teach parents the survival skills of PC life.

Well, if you want to look good to your kids or buddies around the water cooler, check out the following cool web tricks.

Cool Google Tricks

Virtually everyone knows that Google.com ranks at the top of most people’s search engine lists, but it does a lot more than just tell you where to find vitamins or information on George Washington’s wooden teeth!

Need a map to a specific location?

Type in the address, city and state of virtually any location in the US, hit the search button, and Google serves up several different map providers across the Web.

Want to know what software application a certain file goes with on your computer?

Input the file name into Google’s search box and a number of reference sites will help you know exactly what purpose a file serves.

I actually used this to feature to identify a piece of “spyware” lurking on my computer.

Want to know who’s calling you on the phone in the US?

You can just input the phone number on your caller ID or cell phone display into the Google search box and get information on listed numbers before your answering machine can even pick up!

Log on to http://www.google.com/help/features.html for more cool search features that harness the search power of Google.

Text Zoom

Next time you can’t see small text clearly on a website, try holding down the “CTRL” key and then moving the scroll wheel on your mouse up and down.

The text in your web browser (and some programs) will increase and decrease in size as you roll the wheel back and forth.

This little trick provides an excellent means of quickly getting what you need from websites with tiny text.

Slow Surfing?

If your Internet Explorer web browser starts giving you problems, you might want to clean up your “Temporary Internet Files.”

Most people don’t realize it, but when you leave a web page, it doesn’t leave you!

Most of the time you keep a copy of websites you visit on your hard drive and, over time, they build up.

This collection of old web pages can eventually cause your surfing to slow to a crawl and even cause errors!

Here’s one way to clear out those old files. Click your “Start” button, then “All Programs,” “Accessories,” “System Tools” and “Disk Cleanup.”

After an initial check of your hard drive (which can take some time if it’s the first time you’ve ever launched the utility), you can check the boxes of the files you wish to delete.

To speed up your surfing, at a minimum, make sure you delete the “Temporary Internet Files.”

Surfing Shortcuts

To quickly cycle back and forth through a series of web pages you’ve visited, hold down the “ALT” key and tap your left and right arrow keys.

Left arrow takes you back while the Right arrow takes you forward.

The Page Up and Page Down buttons allow you to quickly move up and down any web page without struggling to find the scroll bar slider on the right side of the page.

Here’s Looking At You!

We wrote in January about various biometric scanning systems and fingerprint scanners. At the time we also mentioned retina scanners as one of the systems with potential for wider use in the future.

But it seems that interest in developing retina scanners for the retail market is diminishing. There are two reasons for this: invasiveness and inefficiency.

Retina scanners work by shooting laser light at your eyeball to scan the blood vessels embedded deep within. The veins make a pattern that is as unique to each person as a fingerprint, so they’re hard, if not impossible, to duplicate. Once the authorized person has had his or her eyeballs scanned into the system, retina scanners give very few false negative readings (rejecting an approved user) or false positives (admitting an unapproved one).

The millisecond bursts of laser light are perfectly safe as well as accurate. Unfortunately, most people don’t like the idea of lasers shooting beams of concentrated light energy into their eyes! (I know I don’t; I’ve put off even having laser surgery for years now, despite the glowing reports I’ve received from friends who have undergone the procedure.)

Additionally, retina scanners are user-intensive and slow. For the scanner to work, one must put one’s face within a few inches of the scanner and look directly into it for 10 to 15 seconds while it maps the vein patterns. Having one person after another line up and peer at the device for that long is not an inviting prospect for a company with more than a few employees.

(There’s also the problem of some people’s squeamishness about second-hand contact - you’ve probably noticed Ms. Toddler’s Mom who cleans off the grocery cart handle with a sterilized wipe, or met Mr. Finicky who polishes the mouthpiece of a telephone before talking into it. Just imagine their reaction to putting their faces that close to . . . Horrors!)

Blood vessels also reflect a person’s physical condition. One blogger on a favorite web site wondered if the red eyes associated with his Monday hangover - or the swollen blood vessels from a bout with a cold or a sleepless night - would interfere with accurate readings.

Retina scanners are also expensive compared to more user-friendly proximity or fingerprint scanners. That factor, coupled with employees’ hesitancy to submit their eyes to repeated scanning, will probably conspire to keep retina scanners from widespread use, at least in the foreseeable future.

But there is another alternative that is being researched and put to some use in the security industry.

Iris scanners focus on a different part of the eye. The iris is superficial - that is, it’s located almost at the surface, and it’s covered with minuscule bumps and ridges that are easy to read and difficult to duplicate. Like fingerprints, the iris’s pattern is unique to each person.

Proximity isn’t such an issue with iris scanners as it is with retina scanners, either. One can stand as much as 18 inches away, and the reading is quicker - though probably not quite as accurate. One of the concerns being addressed by some researchers is that contact lenses could be used to falsify the “iris-print.”

Whether or not eye scanners of any sort become the future gold standard for identification, it’s likely that some sort of bio-scanning systems will. As one writer put it, coupling user-supplied information like a user-name - identifying “who you are” - with a biometric reading based on your unique physical self - “what you are” - approaches an ideal combination. Not only is it almost impossible for someone else to falsify a reading based on certain physical characteristics, but it also eliminates the need to remember yet another password.

Other scanning methods include facial dimension scanners and hand scanners, both of which measure not just individual characteristics - fingerprints, shape of the eye, etc. - but the relationship between features - the distance between the brow ridge and the chin, the amount of space between the knuckles on your fingers, the prominence of cheekbones, etc. Even the minute amount of DNA in the sweat or oil on your fingertips can be measured. In fact, DNA readers might well be the ultimate scanning and identification device as we move further into the 21st Century. We’ll see!

Using a Night Vision Device

It’s difficult to see in the dark. Unless there’s some light
peeking in through the window or from under a door, our vision
is compromised. If we wait a little while, our night vision
kicks in, allowing us to see somewhat better. It’s not enough
that we can read in the dark, but it should be enough to keep us
from stumbling into furniture or tripping over the carpet.
Sometimes though, our human night vision isn’t enough and we
need a little help.

That’s where technology kicks in. Thanks to science we can use
night vision to do all sorts of things. With the proper
equipment we can hunt, take pictures or even fight wars in the
dark. We can also perform surveillance and search and rescue
missions.

Here’s how it works: Your night vision product will take
existing light and amplify it through an objective lens, which
then focuses on an image intensifier. A photocathode located
inside the intensifier converts the photon energy into
electrons. The electrons in turn strike a phosphor screen
creating a viewable image. In reality it looks like you’re
watching television on a green screen.

Atmospheric conditions can affect night vision. For instance, if
it’s cloudy, foggy, or overcast, night vision can be
compromised. The clearer the night, the farther one will be able
to see with night vision technology. It should also be noted
that night vision shouldn’t be magnified, as light is lost
during the magnification process making it more difficult to see.

Night vision devices include: - Cameras - Binoculars - Scopes
for firearms - Goggles

If you think that using a night vision device on a frequent
basis might be harmful, you couldn’t be more wrong. Night vision
products are no more harmful than a television or movie screen.
It doesn’t emit radiation or other harmful rays and there’s no
reason for it to cause blindness.

Your Favorite Music Anywhere - MP3 Portable Players Combine Listening Pleasure and Convenience

Love music? Now take your favorite songs anywhere with one of
the hot new mp3 portable players on the market. Some are as tiny
as a pendant. And from the deepest lows to sharpest highs, the
digital sound is fantastic!

Made by Apple, iPod is synonymous with portable mp3 players. The
popular iPod Shuffle is about the size of a pack of gum. The
Dell Jukebox and portable players from Creative Labs, Archos,
iRiver, Rio, Sony, Samsung, iRock, and many more have an
incredible array of features.

Easy-to-use software lets you rip tunes from your CD collection
in mp3 format and load hundreds or even thousands of songs in
your player. Some players can even burn tunes directly from a
built-in FM tuner, a CD player, or other source.

MP3 Revolutionizes Music Enjoyment

Until 1989 the traditional digital music format was the WAV
file. Basically a digital conversion of the analog wave-form
signal, it provided high quality sound recordings. But a 4 to 5
minute song consumed up to 50MB of memory. By selectively
discarding sounds inaudible to the human ear, the mp3 format was
able to store the same song in less than 5MB. Some formats like
WMA and OGG can cut that to around 2MB with even higher quality
sound.

With the advent of flash memory and tiny hard drives known as
micro-drives, by the late 1990’s manufacturers began introducing
small digital music players. And today some portable music
players can store thousands of songs, photos and other data in a
portable player about the size of a deck of cards!
