Reading a green’s slope comes with experience, like a lot of things in golf. The more you play, the better you’ll become at it, as I stress in my golf lessons. Nevertheless, there are some proven techniques I’ve used that will make learning how to deal with sloping greens faster.

Technique #1: Get used to the differences between fast and slow greens
The green’s slope determines the degree of break on a putt. How much the putt breaks depends on two factors: the ball’s speed and the green’s speed (In other words, whether the green is fast or slow). In the summer, the ball tends to break more because the grass is shorter than in the winter, making the green faster. In the winter, the ball tends to break less because the grass is longer than in the summer, making the green slower. Take note of how fast or slow the greens are the next time you play. The Four Season of College Basketball

There are four seasons packed into a college basketball year:
Non-conference play, conference play, conference tournament time
and postseason action (NIT and March Madness). Each has unique
attributes. Non-conference action starts off the year where
teams are getting acquainted with new personnel and facing many
schools they’ve never played before. Conference action finds
teams battling for positioning against teams they face two or
three times every year, while tournament time in February and
March focuses on winning the conference title, having a winning
season, and positioning their team for an invite to various
dances.

We are in phase two right now, conference play. Conference play
is unique in that schools are not traveling as much. A year ago,
North Carolina opened the season at Santa Clara, meaning a team
from the southeast was traveling all the way across the country.
After which the Tar Heels took on teams from the Big 10,
Mountain West, the SEC and the Pac 10. That is a lot of travel
time as well as facing teams they had never seen before. This
makes matchups often difficult and upsets more likely (North
Carolina lost 77-66 at Santa Clara as a 13-point favorite).

Conference play means playing teams in your region, which cuts
down significantly on travel time. It also means players are
facing other players they’ve seen last year, probably several
times, and playing in facilities they have seen before.
Home/road play is certainly a key element for handicappers to
pay attention to, but with shorter distances and familiar places
to go to, it can be less a factor with certain teams because
they’ve been to the opposition’s gym before.

Take a look at Buffalo. Buffalo just came off an impressive win
over Eastern Michigan, followed by a close 84-82 loss in
overtime at a very good Northern Illinois squad. Buffalo got the
cover in both games. The Bulls were experienced and not caught
off guard by these teams, because Buffalo had beaten both a year
ago. In fact, last season Buffalo beat Northern Illinois twice,
86-80 at home and again in the MAC tournament, 73-66. That’s
three games against each other in less than a year. Familiarity
may breed contempt in some social circles, but it helps in
preparation in college basketball.

As conference play continues this month, it’s important to look
back at how these teams did in recent years, especially with
teams loaded with seniors. Buffalo is an uptempo team so perhaps
they can have an edge over a team that lacks depth and plays a
slower style. Fortunately, there is a point of reference to go
to: The last few meetings! But don’t stop there: Check the
boxscores of those games. Did Buffalo play a close first half
against a team lacking depth, then blow them out in the second
half? If so, that could mean a potential wager on the second
half.

Another example could be a team with a significant rebounding
advantage in the frontcourt taking on a team with a small
frontcourt. Again, go back and look at recent games. Did they
own the glass the last meeting? How about the last three
meetings? Conference play offers many opportunities to do this,
especially with teams facing each other two and even three times
a year ago.

Maybe your upper back is making up for your lack of lower back flexibility. Perhaps your lumbar pain results from underdeveloped hips or abs. It doesn’t matter where your ‘weak link’ lies. It always kicks in a series of “compensatory” moves.

These wrong moves are not only an open invitation to injury- they can take you years to correct and refine - if you are blind to the underlying postural flaw.

Three simple ways to Improve your Swing with Better Posture:

1.Stand Tall!
When you slouch, you compromise the normal curvature of the back, which is important for proper joint movement.

Try this simple experiment:
Sit on a chair in the bent-over posture. Your shoulders are slouched and the neck protrudes outwards. Try to swing your arms. Most of the movement will come from your elbows, rather than your shoulder joint (which has a bigger range of motion).

Next, sit up straight, with your shoulders squared and your neck in proper alignment with the spine. Your arms will swing freely from the shoulder and rotate freely in any direction.

More importantly, the right posture will keep your back healthy and minimize the sheer forces on the spine - which form the root cause of pain.

2.Bend at the Hips (not at the Back!)

When you bend, make sure your back is in a neutral position. That can only happen if you bend from your hips.

To facilitate this position, make sure your lower abs are properly engaged. Strong abs are the very foundation of a powerful, fluid stroke!

3.Improve Stability

Better balance and coordination help to effectively transfer the momentum of your swing to the ball.

Stabilize your torso by keeping your feet shoulder width apart- having them too close or too far apart will affect your balance.

Learn to shift your weight smoothly from one foot to the other. It will greatly reduce the impact on your lower back.

Finally, do not lean on the toes or roll at the heels. A shaky foundation can kill momentum before your club head strikes the ball.

It may take some time to get accustomed to the new posture. But these simple changes will help you play better golf longer.

Tennis Fitness - Exercises to Increase the Power of Your Serve - Part I: Building the Foundation

Even athletes with the most dominating serves will find their feet dragging, their legs burning, and their service power diminishing more and more as each point passes. And when a match is tight, some players will feel conserving energy for their opponent’s service return is almost a necessity.

With this, it becomes easy to drop the pace on serves allowing the player across the net to dictate your every move, and possibly derailing any chance of victory. That’s why leg strength is a crucial weapon in any tennis competitor’s game.

This is the first part of a multi-part series that will include exercise progressions that will not only increase your serving power, but it will increase your muscle endurance so that you’ll be serving just as hard in the last set as you did in the first.

Plus, with the right swing technique, your overall power will increase in a few short weeks allowing you to crush a more aces and winning shots.

Though technique is the #1 factor you should concern yourself with, once you’re sure that your mechanics are just right, increasing your strength, strength endurance, and explosion will add velocity to not only your serve, but to every shot.

So let’s get to it…

Power, in tennis, is first initiated by your feet driving into the ground. The harder you can drive your feet, the more force and power you can generate and *potentially* transfer to your racquet.

I say potentially, because if you can generate a lot of force but can’t smoothly transfer it from your legs to your racquet through your hips, core, shoulders, and arms, well, you’re just not gonna have very powerful shots, much less a powerful serve.

It’s that simple.

As you can see, you must be able to smoothly transfer the force generated by your legs to your racquet to increase the power of your serve. But first and foremost you have to be able to generate that force.

Today we’ll concentrate on exercises that increase the strength and power in your legs, so you’ll be able to generate the force needed to increase your power.

And in the following weeks, we’ll discuss how to strengthen each muscle up the kinetic chain, so that the increased force you’re now able to generate is properly and entirely transferred smoothly to increase your power.

Exercises to Increase the Strength and Power in Your Legs:

Progression #1) The Back Squat

How to do it:

Place a barbell behind your neck across the top of your shoulders. The bar should be resting entirely on your trap muscle. Be SURE that the bar is not sitting high on your neck and resting on a vertebrate. If you’re not sure and you feel pain from the bar, re-rack the weight and position the bar about an inch lower on your shoulders. If this is still uncomfortable, you can use a pad or wrap the bar with a towel to add cushion.

Now that you have the bar securely on your shoulders, position
your feet approximately shoulder width apart.

Keeping your abs tight and your back straight, bend your knees
and lower your body toward the ground until your thighs are approximately parallel to the ground. Return to the starting
position.

If you’re a beginner, use a light weight that you can handle for 12-15 reps and perform 2-3 sets with 90 seconds between each set. It’s important to first develop proper form before increasing the weight.

The more advanced trainee should perform 2-3 sets of 6-8 reps with a bit heavier weight to stimulate the fast twitch muscle fibers that are used on the tennis court and to prepare your legs for progression #2

The Minnesota Vikings Are Playing Touch Football

It’s taken me all week to recover from the beating the Vikings took last Sunday. I’ve also been at a loss for words and that’s saying a lot for me. So what’s wrong with the Vikings? Everything but I narrowed it down to what they might be thinking.

Maybe Vikings players believe that they’re in a touch football league. In touch football you are extremely limited in the physical contact that you can make with an opposing player. That’s how I believe the Mike Tice led Offensive Line is playing.
They’re too afraid to make contact with the an opposing player.

I also believe that their defense thinks along the same lines. In the touch football games that I played in, you had to make a two handed touch on the opposing players body. The way the Vikings are playing and tackling, they’re probably not aware that in the NFL you must tackle the opposing player.
Mike Tice’s led Minnesota Vikings are pathetic.

ESPN.com thought that the Vikings were a legitimate contender to win the Super Bowl because they got rid of Randy Moss. They thought the Vikings would be more focused on team effort. ESPN.com seems to have been all hype and no substance when it came to the Vikings.

We knew the Vikings would be awful this year without Randy Moss. They may be a focused team but they’re a team that plays together terribly. They are collectively pathetic.

There are three positive aspects to the season so far. They are:

1) The Vikings are about to play their best game of the year and have their best chance of coming up with a victory. The reason is that they’re entering their bye week and won’t be facing an NFL team this Sunday. They may have a team scrimmage and some part of their team may win.

2) The Vikings play in the worst division in the NFL. The combined amount of victories for the division is a whopping 3 games. The division’s record is 3 wins and 11 losses.
We believe if the Vikings can win six to seven games then they can win the division and make the playoffs.
That’s a complete joke.

3) The Packers have a worse record then the Vikings. They have the worst record in the division. At 0-4 the Pack look like melted cheese out on the field. This puts a huge smile on Vikings fans faces.

The only thing that I’m certain about this year is that this has been the worst four games that I’ve ever seen. There has been a complete break-down from top to bottom.
Something drastic needs to be done and done quickly.
